SHADES DANCE THEATER PRESENTS: THE RETURN
DIVINE NINE | HBCU NIGHT
SATURDAY, JUNE 20 AT 8PM
KSU Dance Theater, Kennesaw State University — Marietta Campus
Shades Dance Theater returns to Atlanta for Juneteenth weekend with a new program, THE RETURN— a night where freedom feels like music, and music feels like home.
SHADES DANCE THEATER & THE DIVINE NINE
Since its founding in 2020, Shades Dance Theater has maintained strong relationships with members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), beginning in 2020, when a founding board member was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
In 2023, during the world premiere of Love, Fantasy, and Euphoria, over 100 members of Alpha Kappa Alpha attended A Matinée in the Shade. In 2024, that engagement expanded into our first Divine Nine | HBCU Night, welcoming members from across the NPHC community.
Now in 2026, Shades Dance Theater returns to Atlanta for Juneteenth weekend with THE RETURN, continuing that tradition with a dedicated Divine Nine | HBCU Night as part of the second performance.
We invite members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council and the HBCU community to join us on Saturday, June 20 at the KSU Dance Theater.
Bring your chapter, family, and community — daughters, partners, friends, and mentees — for an evening of powerful dance.
Chapters are invited to purchase ticket blocks and will be recognized as Partners in Arts & Culture.

TESTIMONIALS
“I have attended the Shades Dance Theater performances for the past 3 years. I find the dancers' ability to tell a story breathtaking. I am moved by the skill and interpretive movements and have laughed, cheered, cried, and applauded with strangers during such scenes where we come together with shared experiences. In the words of Debbie Allen, ‘In places in the world where we don't speak the same language...we dance to the same beat, that is the ONE.’ I feel such unity grounded in the works illustrated eloquently through Shades.”

“The experience of a Shades show is a breath of fresh air. Shades embodies the modern human experience while paying homage to cultural icons and historical moments. The entire production is captivating and rejuvenating to witness.”

“As a dancer, Shades Dance Theater has cultivated such an incredible environment, giving me the platform and space to grow into who I am today. I was there when it was founded and learned so much about myself as a person and dancer. Now as I reflect on pieces I danced in five years ago I can see how much they’ve shaped me. I’ve always felt inspired, not only by being in the pieces but also by hearing the stories and meanings behind them — deeply relatable and personal. Shades is more than a dance theater; it’s a celebration of talent, culture, and community.”
